The obvious downsides are no clear progression and the fact that visiting many of the story-related locations is now mostly pointless (glacial basin, arctic spires, crystal caves). The experience actually reminded me a lot of the original Subnautica during early access before any of the story was introduced. I was amazed how different the tone felt, and it was great to have that feeling of being stranded again like I did in the original. It turns Below Zero into more of a sandbox title and really lets the atmosphere and stage design shine. Overall, I think this is a really fun way to play the game. There is no way to escape the planet or any other conclusion to the gameplay. The PDA where Marguerite reveals what happened to Sam is still physically in her greenhouse, but it can’t be picked up. ![]()
